New York Times bestselling author, Tom Deans, who also happens to be a local resident, had a message for the professional advisors and donors who came to hear him on November 27th.
Instead of the content of Wills being a best-kept secret until death, open up the conversation ahead of time and have honest discussions with family members and heirs.
Prepare them emotionally for what’s coming. Have a conversation around family values and managing family wealth. Make sure that the inheritance will be a blessing and not a burden, or the instigator of family turmoil.
At the Dufferin Community Foundation event, Deans shared anecdotes and advise from his book, Willing Wisdom, in equal measure. He also discussed the important role of philanthropy in building a shared family legacy – and the value of community foundations in providing expertise around causes and managing charitable funds.
We were honoured to host Tom Deans. Having delivered more than 2000 keynotes in 28 countries on four continents, this was his first Dufferin County presentation in 10 years.
