For the second year, Dufferin Community Foundation is leading the call to “Give Where You Live!” this December 2nd and beyond.
GivingTuesday, which was originally created in 2012 as a charitable response to the retail push of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, has become a pivotal day of generosity and kindness across the country. For many, it is the gateway to seasonal holiday giving.
“When we initiated the Give Where You Live! campaign last year, we had no idea how it would go,” said Michele Fisher, Executive Director of Dufferin Community Foundation. “We were blown away by the response. Donations to Dufferin County charities through CanadaHelps.org doubled over the previous year. This is a community of generosity… neighbours helping neighbours.”
More than 30 local charities and non-profits are welcoming gifts on GivingTuesday and throughout the holiday season. The Foundation has put together a GivingTuesday webpage with listings for each one and a link for giving.
Here is a small sampling of GivingTuesday activity taking place across the county:
- Choices Shelter & Support Services is inviting donors to sponsor an individual experiencing homelessness. Sponsorship will provide personalized gifts for those who need it the most.
- Headwaters Health Care Foundation will see every donation matched dollar-for-dollar by the Hartman Foundation, doubling the impact up to $2 million.
- SHIP (Services and Housing in the Province) is seeking to raise $5,000 for supportive housing and mental health services on GivingTuesday.
- Share the Bounty is hosting a Toy Drive in Shelburne at the Giant Tiger on December 2nd from 10:00am to 2:00 pm. Come and bring new toys for kids in need.
- Shelburne Rotary is welcoming donations to the Shelburne Christmas Hamper Program, while the Shelburne Food Bank is registering clients to receive the hampers and toys.
- Community Living Dufferin is asking everyone to wear blue on December 2nd and give to their Inclusion Mini Drive to fund meaningful programs for the people supported by CLD.
Of course, Dufferin Community Foundation is also inviting donations to its Forever Funds – we now have more than 12 endowed funds – including some new this year. For donors who wish to make a Gift of Securities, the deadline for receiving them is December 15th to ensure a charitable tax receipt for 2025.
“Our mission is to connect people who care with causes that matter and one of our goals is to ensure the sustainability of charities in Dufferin County. Through GivingTuesday, we hope to help on both fronts,” said Fisher.
